Storage, filter maintenance and approved fuel blends belong in the comparison too. Explore the Illinois rules and manufacturer guidance below.
For April–November, beginning in 2026, qualifying biodiesel blends must contain more than 19% biodiesel—commonly sold as B20. B20 contains 20% biodiesel. The sales/use-tax exemption is one part of the price, so compare the actual delivered quote.
The law also covers qualifying renewable diesel, a different fuel. This April–November threshold continues through 2030; the exemption is scheduled to end December 31, 2030.
Read the Illinois exemption rules ↗Biodiesel that oxidizes can form deposits that plug filters, affect injectors and reduce fuel-system performance. Storage time and conditions matter, especially when equipment sits between jobs.
Read Caterpillar’s fuel guidance ↗Switching a used fuel system to B20 can loosen existing deposits. Cummins specifies new filters and shorter intervals for the next two filter changes in its B20 changeover guidance. Follow the requirements for your particular engine.
Read Cummins’ B20 guidance ↗B20 is approved for many engines when it meets the required specifications. These are conditional concerns, not a prediction of failure; fuel quality, tank care and maintenance matter with any diesel. U.S. Department of Energy blend guidance ↗
